With the help of junior Jess Sanford, a two-time state championship participant, the Mount Si Wildcats girls’ golf team is hoping to continue their improvement by surpassing last year’s 2-7 record to reach a top-four spot in the league. At the helm is coach Mike Johnston, with 15 continuous years of coaching and 24 total under his belt.

“For some reason, I stopped coaching for a while, then I came back and started doing it again and that’s when we had some girls turning out,” said Johnston. “I was handling the JVs then the first full girls’ team we had was in 1989. The first few years I was paid as the assistant to the boys, the seasons were at the same time.”

This season the team has 14 girls turning out, including seven freshman. Sanford leads the talent pool with last year’s state bid, and her distinction of being named to the All-Kingco golf second team. This year her real goal is to make it to further in the postseason tournament than last season.

“I want to make it to the second day of state,” said Sanford. “I was seven off, which was only three strokes, so I really want to make it to that second day.”
