The Mount Si wrestling team chalked up another league victory last week by defeating the Sammamish Totems 55-15. With most matches ending in pins, the Wildcats once again dominated the mat.

The match started with Mac Donnell at 160 pounds. Donnell wasted no time in controlling the match, notching a pin of the Totems’ Austin Nevins in the first round.

At 171 pounds, the Wildcats sent Dereck Hannaman to the mat against the Totems’ Josh Abergel. Abergel scored a takedown in the first round but Hannaman came back to notch a reversal. Abergel, a veteran varsity wrestler, was too much for Hannam and pulled out the decision, 7-5, in the end.

“The way Derek Hannaman came out was awesome,” said Mount Si coach Jeff Newcomer. “That kid is pretty good and to stay that close is good. He came out really, really good.”

Seth Merrit took to the mat for Mount Si at 189 pounds against the Totems’ Cameron Akana. Merritt controlled the match from the start, scoring a takedown and three-point nearfall in the first round. He added another reversal in the second before recording a pin with 1:39 left on the clock. The win gave Mount Si a 12-3 lead.

“Seth is always strong and showed that strength tonight,” Newcomer said.

At 215 pounds, Dex Moetului followed the lead of Merrit and scored a very quick pin 30 seconds into the match against the Totems’ Vitaliy Fishchuk.

At 275, the clash between the Wildcats’ Jeff Chapman and the Totems’ Dylan Pederson came down to endurance. Chapman scored first with a takedown. In the second round, he scored another takedown but Pederson escaped and then notched a takedown of his own. The third round was a scoring frenzy with each wrestler looking extremely tired. In the end, despite a frantic last attack by Chapman, Pederson won the match 10-9.

“Chapman let the other guy dictate the match,” Newcomer said. “If he would stay with his own plan he would have won, but it is a good learning experience.”

Ryan Makela took care of business for Mount Si at 103 pounds. The young wrestler scored quickly and often to defeat the Totems’ Nick Rogstad 10-0.

“Ryan had one of his best matches of the year,” Newcomer said. “He came out aggressive, which was great.”

Mount Si won by forfeit at 112 pounds and the Totems won by forfeit at 119 pounds to make the score 28-12.

Kyle Heath wrestled an exhibition match against Sam Bloomsburg of Sammamish, pinning him with 1:14 left in the second round.

The Totems had a follow-up forfeit at 125 pounds, but sent Dean Bradshaw to the mat against the Wildcats’ Jacob Lund at 130 pounds. Bradshaw was a formidable foe for Lund, scoring a takedown and two-point nearfall in the first round. In the second, the Totems scored a reversal. In the third round, Lund scored a takedown but in the end it was Bradshaw who won the 9-2 decision. The win by the Totems made the score 34-15.

At 135 pounds, Dallas Liebe took on the Totems’ Sreng Ngor. Liebe scored first with a takedown early in the match. He went on to pin Ngor with 27 seconds left in the second round.

Teammate Jordan Sypher followed suit at 140 pounds for Mount Si. He scored a quick takedown of the Totems’ Mike Evans. Evans escaped so Sypher took him down again, this time pinning him with six seconds left in the round.

In one of the toughest matches of the night, the Wildcats’ Jay Dochnahl took on the Totems’ Nick Price at 145 pounds. Dochnahl scored first, but each wrestler scored points throughout the match. Heading into the third round it appeared, based on activity, that Price would take the win, but a spark from Dochnahl turned the tables and he racked up nine points as the match came to an end. Dochnahl pulled out a 12-8 win, giving Mount Si a score of 49-15.

“Dochnahl’s match was good although for the first two rounds, the Sammamish kid wanted it,” Newcomer said. “He came out in that third round and did it.”

Finally, at 152 pounds, Kenny Morrison racked up another pin, downing Nick Wallick with 1:07 left in the first round.

“Kenny continues to look good in each match,” Newcomer said.

Mount Si takes on Mercer Island at Islander High School on Wednesday, Jan. 18, with varsity wrestling at 7:30 p.m.
