Chesscats now 2-0

The Mount Si Chess Team ran its early season league record to 2-0

last Wednesday, Dec. 8, with a convincing 4.5 to .5 thrashing of the

overmatched Bellevue squad.

Juniors Dan Haas, Dan Haakenson and freshman David Haakenson

each improved their season’s records to 2-0 with victories, while junior

Adam Griffin evened his season record at 1-1 with an easy win. Senior

Nathan Phillips earned the other half-point with a hard-fought draw in his

first match of the season.

The other members of the team are junior David Ard, sophomore

Aaron Speer and freshman Mike Schwab.

The squad scored its first victory two weeks ago with a win

over Bothell. Clearing Bellevue’s board put the Chesscats in second place in

the KingCo chess league, .5 points behind Overlake. Issaquah is in third with

7 points, trailed by Lake Washington (5.5), Bothell (3), Mercer Island

(2), and Sammamish (1.5).

The chess team normally plays on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. The Mount

Si squad had a bye this week and will resume play in January, following

the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. The remaining schedule looks

like this:

Jan. 5 _ Mercer Island

Jan. 12 _ at Sammamish

Jan. 19 _ Issaquah

Jan. 26 _ Lake Washington

Feb. 9 – Overlake

Feb. 25-26 _ State tournament at Issaquah

Mount Si’s chess team has been in existence for seven years.

According to coach Chris Jackson, the goal remains the same: get to state.
