The Red Wolves hosted their last meet of the season against the

Indians of Issaquah. Despite the growing strength in their wrestling ranks,

they couldn’t pull it out against a deep Issaquah team, losing 20-52.

Starting out the meet, Aaron Pedeferri won by forfeit in the

103-pound class. Next up was the young freshman, Darren DeBoer, against

a seasoned Jenkins Chan. Chan quickly took the young Red Wolf to the

mat then pinned him 30 seconds into the round. It was a rare loss for a

wrestler with a promising future.

Eric Pedeferri took to the mat for the Red Wolves in the 119-pound

class against Justin Siems. Pedeferri racked up score after score but could

never quite pin his determined Issaquah opponent. In the first round,

Pedeferri scored five. In the second, he chose the down position then quickly

escaped and took Siems to the mat, then scored a two-point nearfall. He

then let Siems up, only to take him down again, then scored a

three-point nearfall. In the final round Siems had the down position, but again

Pedeferri let him up and then took him down, gaining enough points for the

technical fall.

Alan Shults faced a very tough Indian opponent in Jeff Smith.

Smith controlled Shults from the start, finally pinning him 1:38 into the

second round.

Red Wolf Andrew Claussen also had a tough match in the

130-pound class. His opponent, Zach Hyatt, scored a takedown and

three-point nearfall. For the second round Hyatt deferred position choice to

Claussen, who chose neutral. Hyatt took Claussen to the mat again, then

scored another three-point nearfall in the second round. Scoring three more

points in the third, Hyatt won the decision, 13-2.

Kris Cautrell faced a similar fate in his match, taking on

Issaquah’s Truong Luu. Luu scored fast and furious, ending it with a pin of Cautrell

at the 1:32 mark of the second round. Next up was Adam Speir

against Issaquah’s Jon Katayama. Katayama scored first with a takedown, but

a determined Speir escaped. Katayama scored another takedown as the

round drew to a close. In the second round Katayama scored five more but in

the third, sensing a tiring opponent, Speir scored two take downs, but it

wasn’t enough. Katayama won the decision, 11-5.

The Red Wolves’ Tony Stedman also faced a tough Issaquah

opponent in Chris Long in the 145-pound class. Long controlled the entire

match, eventually winning a major decision, 12-2. Cedarcrest forfeited in the

152-pound class.

In the 160-pound class Rob Westermann pulled out an

amazing match against Issaquah’s Scott Brennan. Westermann scored

first with a takedown but Brennan reversed. Not to be outdone, Westermann

reversed again, but Brennan scored last in the round with another reverse.

The young Red Wolf deferred his position for the second round, with

Brennan choosing down. Brennan scored first with a reverse but Westermann

escaped, then took Brennan to the mat. Each wrestler scored one more

reverse to finish the round. In the final round, ahead by only a point,

Westermann had to keep Brennan at bay and that’s exactly what he did, scoring an

escape and a takedown to win the decision, 12-8.

In the 171-pound class, James Minchew took on Issaquah’s

Levi Miller, but found himself on his back at the 59-second mark of the

third round.

Cedarcrest forfeited in the 189-pound class then sent Cole Birk to

the mat against the Indians’ Lowell Parker. Parker dominated the young

Red Wolf, finally winning by technical fall in the third round, 19-3.

Ben Schlechty won by forfeit in the 275-pound class to finish the meet.

Cedarcrest travels to the league tournament Friday and Saturday,

then to the regional tournament the following weekend.
