SNOQUALMIE – The Mount Si Wildcats girls’ basketball team dominated the Interlake Saints from tip to finish last Wednesday, which allowed the team to rest their starters and give their reserves quality time on the floor. As a result almost every Mount Si player scored, and the Wildcats picked up their biggest win of the year.
Junior Rachel Travis scored 13 points, and sophomore Nicole Remish scored 11, as the Wildcats thumped the Saints 71-16.
“Those girls make my starters better in practice, and they deserve time out there on the floor, too, and game time to work out some of the wrinkles and what not, and they did a good job tonight,” said Mount Si coach Dirk Hansen.
Wildcats’ junior Whitney Beyerlin liked the balanced attack.
“We really distributed the ball well and we made sure that everybody got it before we shot. Everybody was passing really good, and everybody took open shots, and we just happened to be able to finish tonight,” said Beyerlin.
Freshman Alex Love scored six points, and senior Genie Tran scored five second-quarter points to pace the Saints. The large margin of defeat for Interlake has become, regrettably, an all too common occurrence. The Saints have not won a game yet in the conference this year, and in virtually every other conference game they have been routed. In spite of that, Interlake played as hard as they could when they had chances to, but were unable to hit some easy shots and turned the ball over a lot.
There were some low spots for Mount Si in the game, but not many. The most notable of those was a first-quarter technical foul called on Beyerlin.
Mount Si got caught looking ahead to their matchup with Post Falls last Friday, as the Wildcats dropped a 24-point loss at Liberty, 60-36, in a game that would have clinched the No. 2 seed in the Valley Division with a win.
Sophomore Nicole Remish is more focused on finishing up the regular season, which concludes this week with games against Cedarcrest and Issaquah.
“[I] just want to take the regular season first, then take the step up to [postseason],” said Remish.
The Wildcats close out their home schedule Wednesday against the Red Wolves. This will be Mount Si’s second opportunity to clinch the No. 2 seed in the Valley Division with a win. The game also will be the last home game for seniors Karin Brevick, Christie Leatiota, Rae Perrell, Landa Pastrana and Sabrina Porterfield. The Wildcats then wrap up the regular season Friday at Issaquah, in a game that will be more for Mount Si’s confidence than anything else going into the postseason.
Game times for both games are 7:30 p.m.
