‘Cat track showing promise

Even though the Mount Si girls and boys track squads fell to Issaquah, many Valley athletes had good performances to show for their home opener meet.

The Mount Si girls fared best, lagging just two points overall behind the Eagles in the meet, held Thursday, March 26. Junior Alex Rudd led the ladies, scoring a win in the 3,200-meter race. Rudd clocked a time of 12:04.9 to win the race by nearly 30 seconds over Issaquah’s Arielle Walton.

“I had a definite goal today,” Rudd said. “It was a little bit hard, because I was running [by] myself, so I knew that I had to push extra hard in order to make myself maintain my goal pace.”

Senior Nikki Stanton finished second in both the girls 100- and 200-meter events, her first ever track competitions. She is using this track season to prepare for soccer this summer and fall.

“It’s making me faster, getting me in better shape,” Stanton said.

Taylor Robbins finished second in the 400- meter race with a time of 65.1, a second behind winner Blaire Brady from Issaquah. The girls throwers had a good day, with Tori Howell (discus), Molly Meyers (shot put) and Emily Ferree (javelin) all grabbing wins. The jumping and hurdles events also were solid, with Diana Keller (100-meter hurdles, long jump), Hannah Hasbun (300-meter hurdles) and Stephanie Burk (triple jump) winning those contests for the Wildcats.

“The effort was excellent for the girls to come up against a good Issaquah team like this,” said Brian Peterman, Mount Si assistant coach.

The boys managed a solid final score of 64 to Issaquah’s 81, with a number of Mount Si victories in the throwing and jumping events.

Zach Brevick won the discus with a throw of 132 feet to lead a top-four sweep by the Wildcats. Kyle Stevens won the javelin event in easy fashion, and Brandon Roddewig won both the pole vault and high jump competitions. Roddewig’s high jump win led a top-three sweep in that event for the Wildcats.

Stevens also won the triple jump, but that was a much closer margin. Still, his victory led a top-four sweep in that competition for Mount Si.

It was also a good afternoon for Shelby Williams, with his signature effort landing a solid second as part of the 4×100 relay team.

“We had pretty good handoffs and we all ran pretty good,” Williams said. He ran that event with Cody Wise, Kaleb Huerta and Austin Rillos.

Williams also teamed with Brett Duncan, Collin Van Slyke and Zac Pearlstein on a second in the 4×400 relay. Williams and Pearlstein also had a number of other excellent efforts. Williams finished second in both the 100- and 200-meter race, missing victories in both by just inches.

Pearlstein scored a personal best time in the 800-meter race to finish second.

“I’ve only ran it once before, so it was really good,” Pearlstein said.

Overall, boys head coach Chris Jackson liked what he saw.

“We certainly tried hard,” Jackson said. “Our field events went pretty well, the throws went well. I think we have some jumpers for the first time in a couple of years. They’re going to get better as the year goes along.”

Mount Si hosts Skyline at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 2, then goes to the Arnie Young Invitational at Renton Stadium on Saturday, April 4.
