The Cedarcrest Red Wolves have announced to the wrestling

community that they are a force to be reckoned with. With the Pedeferri

brothers taking two league titles, the wrestling community is paying attention.

Eric and younger brother Aaron Pedeferri were the stars of the

Red Wolves’ show as both dominated their weight classes and won league

titles at 119- and 103-pounds respectively. However, while they provided

the highlights for the finals, overall it was a much more robust and

well-coached Cedarcrest team that showed up for this year’s league tournament.

Aaron led the effort in the 103-pound class, eventually beating

Mount Si’s Jordan Prior in the finals. After an opening round bye,

Pedeferri pinned the Totems’ Clayton Quttitte 33 seconds into the first round. In

the semi-finals he met Newport’s Josh Luttman and pinned him in the

first round at the 1:54 mark.

The two pins moved him into the finals against Prior. In the

opening round, he scored a takedown and three three-point nearfalls. He added

another takedown and three-point nearfall in the second round,

winning by a technical fall, 15-0.

The Red Wolves had two wrestlers in the 112-pound class,

freshmen Kurtis Lett and Darren DeBoer. DeBoer had been wrestling varsity

all year and doing well. He made it to the semi-finals before losing a decision

to Mount Si’s Andrew Ahmadi, 12-5. DeBoer then took on Mercer

Island’s Rusty Johnson, defeating him, 13-11. In the last bout of the night,

DeBoer took on Skyline’s Ricky Chun but lost an 11-8 decision for fourth place.

After an opening round loss, Lett worked his way through the

consolation bracket, taking sixth and earning a

trip to the district tournament.

State-placer Eric Pedeferri put on quite a show as he pinned his first

three opponents early in the first rounds of their matches. In the finals he

faced Issaquah’s Justin Siems, winning by technical fall late in the third

round, 16-1.

Bobbie Scholander and Alan Shults took to the mat for

Cedarcrest in the 125-pound class. Shults won his opening round match, then lost

and moved to the consolation bracket where he took a respectable

sixth place. Scholander, a freshman, lost his opening round match and his

consolation match, falling from the competition.

Cedarcrest also had two competitors in the 130-pound class,

Andrew Claussen and Logan Kingston. Claussen won his first round

match, pinning Liberty’s Rick Kenyou, but lost to Skyline’s Kevin Burton.

He then worked his way through the consolation bracket eventually

meeting Burton again, and again losing, but still picking up sixth and a trip to

districts. Kingston also lost his opening round match and his consolation round

and departed.

In the 135-pound class, veteran Kris Cautrell started with an

opening round bye then lost to Interlake’s Michael Eav by pin. The loss

moved him to the consolation bracket where he won two matches, taking seventh.

Adam Speir wrestled for Cedarcrest in the 140-pound class.

He won his opening round match against Bellevue’s Cameron Chase with a

pin at the 2:24 mark but then lost to the eventual 140-champ, Adam

Andrie. The loss moved him to the consolation bracket where he fell to

Newport’s Charlie Wenger, 20-17.

Next up for Cedarcrest was Tony Stedman in the 145-pound

class. Stedman had a first round bye then lost to Issaquah’s Chris Long, 7-3. He

subsequently worked his way through the consolation bracket, eventually

taking fifth and earning a trip to districts.

In the 160-pound class, the Red Wolves sent freshman

Robby Westermann to the mat. Westermann lost his opening round match to

the Wildcats’ Bobby Taylor ,10-8, but won his first consolation match

against Skyline’s John Keller. Westermann recorded an impressive 18-4

finish before losing his next match.

Chris Ansell wrestled for the Red Wolves in the 171-pound class but

fell in his first two matches. Cole Birk followed in the 215-pound class,

winning his opening match against Interlake’s Buck Taylor with a pin in 37

seconds. He then faced the eventual class champ, Robert Reyes, losing in a

50-second pin. Birk then moved to the consolation bracket, eventually

taking seventh.

Finally, in the 275 -pound class, Bela Hill lost his first match to

the Wildcat’s Sean Sexton, moving him into the consolation bracket.

After three byes he lost to Mercer Island’s Patrick Murphy by pin at the

2:53 mark.

The team effort will send seven wrestlers to the district

tournament, with two top seeds in the Pedeferri brothers.
