It was an interesting spring break week for the Mount Si boys’ soccer team as they struggled without several key players, who were out either due to injury or vacations.

The Wildcats fell at Mercer Island last Tuesday. Jace Derwin scored the lone goal for Mount Si, but it came too late in a 2-1 loss. The Islanders had built a 2-0 lead prior to Derwin’s goal, which came with just seconds left in regulation time.

Mount Si traveled to Skyline and faced off with the Spartans last Friday, April 13.

Despite being already shorthanded (among those missing were Kevin Isackson, Andrew Talevich, and Gibson Bardsley) and getting even further short with two more players being lost, the Wildcats overcame the superstitious elements of the date and posted a 1-1 tie.

Mount Si coach Darren Brown was disappointed in the tie. “Yeah, we got a point out of it, but we had so many opportunities that we could’ve taken advantage of and we just didn’t,” said Brown, and he had a right to be unhappy; two apparent Wildcat goals were disallowed by officials during the match, and that wasn’t the only thing working against the ‘Cats on this night.

Mount Si’s possession control was again a theme in the first half of this contest, just like it was against Newport April 5. The Wildcats controlled the ball for at least 60 percent of the half, and got a number of good scoring chances. However, one play became rather costly.
