The Mount Si Wildcats boys’ basketball team struggled offensively Jan. 30 in a loss to Newport.

Matt Winter scored 19 points as the Knights successfully avenged their upset loss to the Wildcats Jan. 22 with a 61-42 victory. Richard Woodworth paced Newport with 12 points.

Tanner Riley had a strong night, scoring 18 points for Mount Si, but the team overall shot only 29 percent from the floor and was held to just three points in the entire third quarter.

Collin Bennett added 10 points to aid the Knights’ effort. Newport’s cause was also helped by strong rebounding; the Knights picked up a staggering 47 boards.

The Wildcats played very well last Friday at home against league-leading Issaquah, but a 13-0 Eagles run at the end of the first half changed the entire tone of the contest as Issaquah used that spurt to pull away and get the victory.

Bren Hobzek scored 21 points as the Eagles rolled 69-48. “We knew we would see a different Mount Si team than we faced earlier in the season and we’ve got to give them credit because they’re getting better,” said Issaquah coach Jeff Patrick, who added praise for his junior star. “Bren’s our guy. He’s our leading scorer and when we need a basket, he’s a guy we look to to take the big shot for us and he did that tonight and thankfully, it was going in,” Patrick said.
