It was a tight one for the Mount Si High School baseball team last Friday, April 11, but they brought home their fifth straight win, beating the Interlake Saints.
Tim Proudfoot hit a single and triple and scored two runs as the Wildcats outlasted Interlake, 4-2.
“You know, there’s no sleepers in Kingco,” said a pleased Mount Si coach Chaz Carr. “Anybody can beat anybody on any given day.
“Wasn’t pretty today, but we found a way to get guys across the plate and found a way to win,” Carr added. “We’ll take it.”
Proudfoot was prepared to deliver.
“I just came ready to play today,” the freshman infielder said. “I was expecting a win, so I knew what to do.”
Interlake got on the board first, with a run in the top of the first inning off of Mount Si starting pitcher Frank Tassara. The Wildcats responded in the bottom of that frame, with Proudfoot’s triple. The freshman scored on a sacrifice fly by Danny Cavanaugh. The Saints re-took the lead 2-1 with a run in the second off of Tassara. They were aided by a double in that frame.
Replacing Tassara for Mount Si on the mound in the third was sophomore Taylor Campbell, and he got the job done, going the rest of the way without giving up a run. He gave up four hits and struck two out in his five innings.
Carr was especially pleased with Campbell’s efforts.
“That’s what Campbell’s been doing all year,” he said. “We call him ‘Big Donkey’ for a reason. He comes in and he does his job. He’s our workhorse.”
The pitcher didn’t take all the credit.
“I wasn’t really hitting my spots, but the defense made me really look good,” Campbell said. “I had a little backup.”
The Wildcats took the lead for good in the fifth. Singles by Proudfoot and Cavanaugh, and an Interlake error on a Proudfoot stolen base attempt got the ball rolling for Mount Si. A groundout by Justin Poth resulted in the first out, scoring Proudfoot. Then Zach Robinson reached on an error, scoring Cavanaugh from third base. Robinson was awarded second on a fielder’s interference against Interlake during a rundown play following the error. Hepner then flew out to right and Robinson was ruled out for leaving the base too early.
Mount Si added insurance in the bottom of the sixth. Rossco Castagno doubled with two out, then came in on a single by pinch-hitter Alex Hiebert.
Campbell had to work a little bit in the seventh, giving up two singles to the Saints, but he got a strikeout in the frame and got the final Interlake hitter to ground into a fielder’s choice for the final out of the game.
Last Thursday’s game with Skyline was postponed until this week due to rain.
This week is a busy one for Mount Si. On Friday, April 18, they are at Mercer Island after three home games to start the week, against Liberty on Monday, April 14, Skyline on Tuesday, April 15, and Cedarcrest on Wednesday, April 16. Home game times are 4 p.m.; Friday’s game at MI looks to be under the lights at 6:30 p.m. at Island Crest Park.
