Who are the Eagles?

Letter to the Editor

They are many things: a rock group, Scouts, ball teams, the national emblem and many more too numerous to mention.

But did you know that the Fraternal Order of Eagles is an organization of more than a million members, known throughout the United States and Canada as “People Helping People.” They also have fun doing so.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles was founded in Seattle in 1898. The Eagles is credited with being recognized as making a plea to honor mothers. From that plea came what is now known as Mother’s Day.

After signing bills into law, two presidents have handed the pens to the Eagles – President Franklin Roosevelt for the Social Security Act in 1935 when he noted that the Eagles had the “vision and courage” to make it happen; and President Lyndon B. Johnson for the bill ending age discrimination in the work place after age 40. Johnson stated that, “The Eagles started the whole idea.” When Johnson later signed the Medicare bill, he credited the Eagles by saying, “For your energetic and dedicated espousal of social justices … and the compassionate treatment of the sick and disabled.”

Our local Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3529 right here in the Snoqualmie Valley embraces all of these ideals. Many of our functions say “members and guests only.” Did you know you can be a guest by walking in the door and seeing our facility, talking to our members and joining us in our many charitable fund-raising activities? These activities are conducted by both the men’s “Aerie” and the ladies’ “Auxiliary,” which total 600-plus members.

In the past year, our local Aerie and Auxiliary have contributed to the community in various ways, including contributing scholarships worth $500 to both Mount Si High School and Two Rivers School; donating over $5,000 to people in need due to illness, accident or hard times; donations to various youth groups, community activities and national charities; and sponsoring children’s activities, including Easter egg hunts (in cooperation with the city of Snoqualmie), Halloween parties, Christmas parties and other activities.

We have a full-use facility that includes a social room and kitchen facilities available for banquets, wakes, weddings, parties, meetings and fund-raisers. The facility is available in many formats and information may be obtained by calling (425) 888-1129.

Come in and see us. We welcome your visit. Learn more about the Fraternal Order of Eagles at www.foe.com.
