Walkway in Snoqualmie needs some safety rules

Published 12:55 am Friday, October 3, 2008

What do the words “public safety” mean in the community of Snoqualmie? May I offer a case in point?

Within the city of Snoqualmie, the pedestrian walkway from King Street to River Street is a solid, pebbled area. The outside edge joins the curb of SR 202, while the inside edge faces the stores and an off-street parking lot. Distances of the stores from the walkway can vary from 6 inches to approximately 5 feet. The surface is cement.

Even though pedestrians do have the right of way, it is difficult for them to walk the pebbled path. This is due to the attitudes of bikers who insist upon racing their bicycles.

There is no effective police control in the area.

Having watched the situation of some time, I would like to offer a suggestion. Since the width of the pebble path is only 71/2 feet, every biker should be required to dismount upon entering and remain to guide his/her bicycle safely. No bicycle racing or bullying should be permitted.

The minimal working unit is:

One pedestrian in charge.

One bicycle attendant on foot (bicycle rider).

One bicycle.
