We have had some really spectacular weather lately, from being
the warmest spot around (72 degrees) to thunder storms that really rattled
the walls. A couple of dazzling rainbows showed up on two separate Friday
afternoons just as we closed the library. The first one was the clearest,
most vivid rainbow I have ever seen, and perfectly centered in front of
Mount Si. It had been very gray all day, and the patrons were grouchy and we
were all feeling a bit crabby ourselves. That rainbow made the day. I guess we
all need to remember that if you don’t have rain, you don’t get rainbows.

Funky Fact: I was told as a child that thunder was the men of
Henry Hudson’s ship, the Golden Hind, bowling in the sky. If you listen,
you can hear the balls rolling down the lane, with the crash of the pins at
the end. My great-aunt Ann was German, from New York, and I think the
origin of this tale was Washington Irving. I told this to Kylie Aberle at the
library one day. She seemed quite intrigued with the idea of a bunch of old
men bowling in the sky.

There will be a class on creating a Nature Journal at the North Bend
Library on Saturday, May 20, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Join instructor
Molly Hashimoto to learn how to observe the natural world and record what you
see. Molly will share her collection of artist and naturalist’s journals. All

In keeping with the National Endowment for the Humanities
millennium project, join Bill Walker and Diane Guthrie on Tuesday, May
23, at 7 p.m. to discover how you can help preserve America’s history in the
form of your own family story. Bill will be explaining his local oral
history project and Diane will show how interviews and histories can be
captured on film.

Reader Karen Calvin brought me another nice “multiple adjective.”
A “clutch” of second thoughts. The witty remark we should have uttered in
company, or the wonderful comeback we didn’t think of until it was too late.
I’m sure we can all relate to this one. “I should have said that” … “That
would have fixed `em.”

I want to wish the Mountain Man a happy birthday. He will be
“another year older and deeper in debt” on
Friday. My apologies to Tennessee Ernie Ford, but I have always liked
that phrase. Seems to sort of sum the whole thing up. For those of you too
young to know what I am talking about, please feel free to drop by the
library for an explanation.

One more for the books: More than 10 kisses, in public, over a
six-month period will be considered a legal engagement in Arkansas. Isn’t
that one of the states where people can still get married at 12?
