Remember those in need locally

Record Editorial.

With the holiday season upon us we all are reminded of things to be grateful for, like home, health, family, etc. But many residents across the Valley are facing major financial issues, and without our help there will be little for them for which to be grateful.

The events of Sept. 11 saw an outpouring of financial help to the victims and their families. Many of you took the time to send cards, money or whatever you could to help. That effort was greatly appreciated by those residents, but the need is now here at home. It’s great that we can contribute to regional and national charities, but how can we feel good about our dollars going outside the area when we have people with little food on the table, or children who aren’t likely to find a gift under the tree?

This past week I heard several stories of people unable to afford the basic elements of the holidays, such as a Christmas tree. Playing the role of a fat man in a red suit this past weekend, I had a few kids tell me to bring their parents something because they could not afford anything themselves. If that doesn’t pull on your heartstrings then nothing will.

So what can we do? Well there are several food banks throughout the Valley. Another idea is to support the giving trees put out by the Kiwanis at several locations, including Sterling Bank and QFC.

If you have children in school, then check with the office at the school to see if there is a way you can provide some kind of donation to families, from within the school, that may also need help. Many principals know who the families are that may need help within their school.

Another option is to contact one of the local churches and ask if there is a family you can help. Most of the time the best method is to do it anonymously, with the church or sponsoring organizations making the drop.

Finally, if you are in Snoqualmie and want to donate food or money, feel free to do so here at the Valley Record office. We will make sure one of the local organizations gets your donations.
