Initiative-912 is on the ballot coming up because of some seriously hard work from citizens who took the time to get petitions signed and turned in 420,000 signatures that were gathered in only 32 days. We have another chance to vote that gas tax down because of heart and sweat from grass-roots folks.

When the Legislature hastily voted in the gas tax months ago, members slapped an emergency clause on the bill to make sure that people could not overturn the vote with a referendum. The reason they did this is because we the people already voted down a gas tax three years ago and they knew we would not like what they were doing. We already have the fifth highest gas tax in the nation and it isn’t helping anything.

The Legislature has no plan to show how they will use our money. This vote is a matter of principle to me. I want to send a message to Olympia that we really mean it when we vote no. We are not going to sit down, be quiet and let them make huge financial decisions with our money without our say so. We said no, and we mean no. Living in King County, we already pay through the nose in taxes. What have we got to show for it?

No means no; I hope they get the message. I thank each person who helped make this initiative possible. I also thank those in the Legislature who voted no on the gas tax. We know who you are and we will remember you on election day.
