Editor’s note: This letter refers to a story published in the March 1 edition of the Valley Record titled “Faces changing at local library.”
I am the husband of a staff member at the North Bend library. The reporter seemed to have spent most of her time interviewing management and the very few people in support of the new clustering plan. If more effort had been made to speak with staff actually affected by this new policy, your readers would have a better understanding of how their library system is about to change.
My wife, Jody Larson, now has a schedule that has her working 17 days in other libraries and 15 days at the North Bend library where she was hired. She has an eight-week, 32-day rotation. This is typical throughout the system. There will be days when she will be driving to work in Carnation while at the same time, a staff member from Carnation will be driving up to North Bend. This makes no sense.
Our local libraries should be staffed with people familiar with the patrons and the interests of the communities they serve. North Bend and Carnation are two distinct communities. How is the public better served by moving the staff around helter skelter?
As a taxpayer and library patron, I will not vote in support of the next bond until I see better management of our library system.
