MSHS vocalists display exceptional talents

Letter to the Editor

The word amazing” best describes the Dec. 19 concert presented by the Mount Si High School Choral Department. Each performing aggregation, ranging from madrigal choir, vocal jazz ensemble, concert choir and chamber choir, delivered sparkling performances.

That evening a cold, bitter wind blew across the Valley. The audience seated in the Mount Si High School auditorium, however, was treated to the warm flow of music beautifully presented. The ensemble blend, attention to dynamics, articulation and artistic phrasing carried by vibrant vocal production proves that these young people listen not only to one another, but particularly to their extraordinary musician/teacher, Kim Snavely.

The stage demeanor, though relaxed, did not detract from the poise displayed by conductor, singers and accompanists. All of the above showcases vibrant education at its best. The students displayed the discipline of sustained, precise teamwork, so subtle it is usually limited to more seasoned ensembles.

This school district is blessed with exceptional teachers of music. They are imparting a standard of excellence far beyond the equation of a WASL test. These young people should not be performing to a single empty seat.

That evening the stage was filled with well prepared students gathered not to combat an opponent, but to join voices creating joyful, powerful instruments of harmony and melody. They did it soaring through a program reflecting the rich legacy of choral literature.

As one who has devoted an entire lifetime to the process of making music, I thrill more than ever to the limitless promise of youth, talent and character when nurtured by a caring community and exceptional educators. These “Wildcats” really know how to purr!
