I hope you will all be “wearing the green” for St. Patrick’s Day this
week. Do you know why St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland?
Because they couldn’t afford plane fare. Pretty bad, huh? I got that off a greeting
card a friend sent me. It had a whole list of them, and believe it or not, that
one was the best of the bunch!

Alpine Fitness has the spirit of the season on their reader board. I
realize it wouldn’t rhyme as well, but the proper form is St. Paddy. I do like
the sentiment though. May we all be healthy in this new century.

Flower Fairies will soon be seen in the Valley. Lauri Jae Sweetland
will be at the North Bend Library on Wednesday, March 22, at 6:30 p.m.
for a program on Fairy Tale Gardens.
Audience participation and artistic renderings of characters make
this an entertaining journey into the world of fairy tales for all young
children. Bettina has dressed as a Flower Fairy to help promote this program
and many books are available. Come on by the library and check it out.

The Mountain Man has been down to the Fishing Lodge this past
week. He has been working on the floors and pipes, so I got to stay home. We
have discovered we still have ants! Apparently, we were fortunate enough
to have the worst exterminator in the universe do the work. But local
folks have made recommendations and the problem is being addressed.
Ants down there and ladybugs up here. Where do all those little
critters come from? The ladybugs, I mean. I seem to have evicted several
hundred and they still zoom around the room in the evenings. Are they coming
in the back door as I dump them out the front? Maybe I only have six and
I have evicted them several times. They all look so much alike it is hard to
tell. Maybe I could start marking them as I toss. Branded ladybugs. What a
concept.

In the “urban wildlife” category, I saw a very cool red-tailed hawk on
the freeway last week. He was sitting on one of the curved light poles over
an off ramp. All he needed were shades and a tiny leather jacket. His
whole attitude was Joe Cool.
I also saw what I think was a bald eagle circling over the river near
the Factory Stores. I was watching it and got one of those little crowds
going, where everyone looks up to see what you are staring at. We agreed it was
a very nice bird, whatever it was. I am not sure they believed me when I
said it was an eagle. One lady remarked that she thought eagles only lived
in Alaska! She got into an out-of-state car, so we will excuse her ignorance.

Funky Fact: Sooner or later, everyone who does a Katherine
Hepburn imitation utters the line “The calla
lilies are in bloom.” But do you know where that line comes from?
In the 1937 movie “Stage Door,” about a boarding house for young
actresses, Katherine says that line in an audition she is doing for a play.
She gets the part, with dire consequences for the plot.
The movie, which was designed to be a sort of showcase for all the
young actresses RKO had under contract, also starred Lucille Ball and
Ginger Rogers. Lucy played a struggling actress who couldn’t decide whether
or not she should give it all up and marry her rich beau, a lumber baron
from Seattle! I can recommend it to all old movie buffs.

Thought for the Week: For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over
and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is
come. _ Song of Solomon 2:11-12 KJV
Well, maybe the rain part is a bit optimistic.
