Let friends, family know you are thankful for them

A look at life in Snoqualmie through the eyes of a local.

My car wash fund-raiser was a success. At first we all worried that

between the wind and cold and clouds nobody would want their cars

washed. But we had a good turnout. I think the sun came out just enough to show

the dirt on the cars, but it was cold enough where people preferred to pay

somebody else to wash them.

I have to give a big thanks to my sister Margie, my niece Emily,

my brother Russell, the Snoqualmie firefighters on duty that day –

Matt West and Steve Randall – for all their help and support. Lucy came

along and helped too. The Fire Department was nice enough to let me have

the car wash at the fire station, and several firefighters brought their

vehicles in for a wash and to donate. Thanks everyone.

Now that I have my nine-mile walk out of the way, I don’t feel so

nervous about the upcoming 12-mile walk. I figure, what’s another three miles.

One thing I will not do again is make an early morning appointment to

donate blood on the day of group training. The day we walked six miles I

donated blood at 8 a.m., then drove to Seattle for the training, then was up

baking until 11 p.m. and had my bake sale the next day. I longed to be lazy

for several days after that. While I was baking, I cranked up the music for

energy and danced a little; but the dancing came to an end quickly when

the fatigue set in.

Thanksgiving is around the corner. Not only is it time to find the time

to let friends and family know how thankful we are for them, it’s also

time to plan that menu. If you need help with your turkey, call Butterball’s

Turkey Talk-line at (800) 323-4848. Or go to a Thanksgiving Web

site www.aristotle.net/thanksgiving, which is full of recipes,

decorating ideas, stories and online Thanksgiving cards you can send.

It happened this week: Teddy bears appeared in 1902, named

for Teddy Roosevelt; and the first coin-operated phonograph made its

debut in 1889.

Ooh-la-la! Ultra-rich dark chocolate mousse: In large mixing

bowl combine 1/2 box (2.6 oz.) whipped topping mix with 1 box (1.4 oz)

fat-free, sugar-free instant chocolate pudding mix. Add 1 1/2-c. cold milk

and 1 tsp. vanilla extract. Beat with blender on low speed until well

combined. Then beat on high until soft peaks form. Fold in 2-oz. dark

chocolate, which has been melted and cooled to room temperature. Spoon into

parfait glasses and enjoy.

Winter’s coming – is your car ready? One thing to think about is

the windshield wipers. If you haven’t installed new ones recently, the

wiping edge of the blade won’t clean properly. You might not realize this

until you’re in the worst of driving conditions.

Lately Sparky has taken to sleeping under the covers. He got into

bed with me one night and kept clawing at my shoulder until I finally

whacked him (lightly of course), but he persisted. Then he tried to burrow

himself so I finally caught on and lifted the bed covers. Next thing I know

he’s purring away, and I’m being kept toasty by an orange and white brat!

Last week I had a recipe for spiced pumpkin nut bread and omitted

how much vegetable oil to use. The amount was 1/4-c. vegetable oil. Ooops! Sorry.
