Know what levies will cost you before voting

Letter to the Editor

On Feb. 5, you can vote for the new school levies of $1.68 and 28 cents each per thousand dollars of assessed valuation. You will also continue to pay for four, 20-year bonds, maturing 2004 to 2017. The cost to you is $1.27 per thousand.

To figure the total amount you would pay if the two levies pass, multiply $3.23 per thousand. Look at last year’s tax statement to see what other taxes/levies you pay. The amount going to the state includes school support also.

Unfortunately, school levies are always put on the ballot shortly before your tax statement arrives. School and fire districts, libraries and other taxing districts pay more for special elections rather than being included in the September primary or in the general election in November because there is a lower turnout.

Know what it is costing you and vote wisely.
