He epitomizes love of Valley

Record Editorial

Last Saturday was a milestone in North Bend business. Kwok Louie and his wife, Lin, held their final Christmas party and with it, a sad goodbye to many friends, neighbors and customers.

Kwok and Lin have been owners of the Hangchow Restaurant in North Bend for 29 years. They first opened the Hangchow in 1972 when the freeway still passed through town.

Two weeks ago I was asked by a friend, Rick Williams, to come down to the Hangchow for dinner with my wife Karen. Rick explained that Kwok wanted to talk about selling the business, and thanking all his loyal patrons.

We showed up at the Hangchow for dinner and found the restaurant quiet. A table was set up for about eight of us and Kwok was there to welcome us to his restaurant. I did not really know Kwok that well, but he came across as a very gracious host.

In the kitchen, Lin was cooking some amazing dishes, which Kwok served to us in 10 different courses. After dinner, though, was the best part of the evening as this longtime Valley businessman began telling story after story. I rattled off questions hoping to instigate further discussion, and with each question came a very vivid recollection of the smallest details.

But as I sat there listening to Kwok’s broken English and occasional laughter, it became apparent how deeply he loves the Snoqualmie Valley. As he recalled some of the many stories brought up that evening, an occasional tear filled his eye. He remembered names, faces, situations, even sleeping in one of the restaurant’s booths, all with a positive outlook, never negative – although he did admit it was tough to sleep in the booth when the freeway went through the middle of town.

Then on Saturday night, it was the “who’s who” of the Snoqualmie Valley as the Hangchow was packed to the door with patrons, many wishing Kwok and Lin a happy future. A huge spread of food and several hours of visiting with friends made it a special evening, but more importantly, it made me wonder about the future of such gatherings.

As residents such as Kwok and Lyn leave the Valley, will someone new step into their place and provide the glue that brings so many people together to enjoy each other’s company?

I guess things that are important to me were epitomized in the evening at Kwok’s, family, friends and the ability to enjoy a great meal as we talk about things happening in our lives. It was also refreshing to see a man who so humbly loves the Snoqualmie Valley because of the people and way of life he has enjoyed.

Good Luck to Lin and Kwok as they move back to Hong Kong. You will be sorely missed by many friends. Remember to make sure you have enough room in your condo so we can all visit on occasion.
