There are many people in the Valley who donate their time, talents or money to various causes. But I would argue with anyone that few do more than my friend, Chris Garcia.

You probably know Chris as a city councilman for North Bend, or possibly as the owner of Frankie’s Pizza in North Bend. For some of us lucky enough to know him through various events or functions, we also know how much he does for the Valley and specifically our local schools and sport booster clubs.

If you didn’t know, Frankie’s Pizza donates all the pizzas for various booster club events at the high school, including football games, basketball games, etc. He always is willing to pitch in for youth activities.

He is also a graduate of Mount Si and realizes how important this community is to many of us and does what he can to make it a better place to live. He does this from the background with very little fanfare and would rather be somewhat anonymous when it comes to his charitable work. In other words, he never asks for anything in return.

So, now we have an opportunity to show Chris Garcia how much we appreciate him being a part of our community. Chris is raising money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a nonprofit that helps support childhood cancer research and treatment. All the money collected will go to the charity but, more importantly, if he raises $4,000, he will shave his head. For many of us who still have our hair, it’s a big deal to even consider parting with it. It shows how dedicated Chris is to helping children’s charities.

So let’s do our part by pledging money toward the event. I challenge everyone in the chamber, any parents from local sporting teams, the Little League board, the city council, yes Ross, that includes you, the mayor and anyone who loves Frankie’s Pizza to donate. There are several locations including Frankie’s, North Bend City Hall and even the Valley Record office, at which to drop off donations.

As a bonus, the person who donates the most money gets to shave Chris’ head. Of course, a person who might be a bit nervous causing their hands to shake could be interesting.
