If you don’t compost the leaves that are now showing up on your
lawn, and you don’t have roadside yard waste pick-up, you have yet
another choice!
Bob Sargent of Rainier Wood Recyclers (rwr@oz.net) writes that
he just wants “to let people know we are accepting loose leaves from
fall cleanup at our Fall City yard free of charge. We are adding this to our
other free community offerings, including free senior citizen drops for brush
and the annual Christmas `TreeCycling’ program.” Rainier Wood
Recycling is open Monday through Friday 8-4 across
from the elementary school in Fall City.

And speaking of choice, signs popped up around the Valley
announcing the “write in” campaign of
Democratic hopeful Di Irons. Di is running for the King County Council seat
currently held by Brian Derdowski. Derdowski was defeated by
Republican Dave Irons, in the low-turnout primary held last
month. Di Irons is supported by a broad group of local
citizens who appreciate the quality of life we are so fortunate to have here in
this area.
Di’s platform includes saying “Not so fast!” to developer-driven
agendas she foresees compromising what is valuable and unique to this area
we treasure and call home. For more information on this campaign, check
out www.e-quality.simplenet.com/diirons/. But no matter what, if
you are registered, be sure to go to the polls and vote for the candidates of
your choice.

Permit me to share a recent milestone: Howard and Lucille Hicks
recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. I fondly remember
my grandparents’ 50th. My mom passed away before she and my dad had
their 50th. But, in this age where so many marriages don’t “make it,” it is
cause to congratulate Howard and Lucille!
Enjoying a beautiful day, September 11th – and one day after their
anniversary – a party was held at Wayne and Connie’s in honor of their
parents, co-hosted by all the kids, including Pat and Rona Hicks of Elk Grove,
Calif., Janis and Lowell Callendar of Oregon City, Nancy and Barry Crossan
of North Bend, and, of course, Wayne and Connie of Fall City.
Lucille and Howard’s biggest surprise was the arrival of their
oldest grandsons, Mike and Shayna, of Santa Clara, CA, and Jeff and Emily
Hick of Fresno, who flew up for the weekend. Howard and Lucille were
very lucky to have all of their family present, except one grandson,
Ryan Denis, stationed at Fort Lewis but currently attending Helicopter
mechanic school in Virginia. Ryan’s wife – Heather – and baby son Tristen –
the Hicks’ first great-grandchild – were able to attend. Everyone enjoyed
the steak barbecue, deep fried turkey and delicious potluck dishes.
After dinner, Pat and Wayne gave a a champagne toast and then the
children presented Lucille and Howard with a trip to Maui! They also
used the occasion to celebrate Howard’s birthday, which is the 22nd. The
lovely cake was decorated with “Anniversary and Birthday Wishes.” The
afternoon was spent visiting and taking lots of pictures.
It was a very busy time for Howard and Lucille the next day
(Sunday), with a Hicks Celebration (of anniversary and birthday) at the Club
House at Kachees Lake, given by Don and Cletis Hicks of Issaquah, Ben
Hicks of Kent and Lucille Sienia of Ellensburg. It was also a
barbecue potluck with lots of wonderful food and was attended by 65 family
members, many of whom hadn’t seen each other in years!
After one day of rest, it was back to Ellensburg for three days to
attend Howard’s 60th High School Reunion. The main dinner was held at
the Moose Lodge; the last day’s breakfast and farewells took place at the
Best Western.
There were 75 attendees, counting spouses; Ivan Shelton of
Abilene, Texas, came the farthest. They said this would probably be their last get
together. The Hicks missed the one two years ago, as they were leaving for
a trip to San Antonio.
All in all, September was a wonderful and busy month for Howard
and Lucille!
