Editorial was disconcerting

I found myself saddened and dismayed by Jim McKiernan’s recent editorial, titled “Turning a new leaf toward political correctness.” The editorial aimed to bring humor to, and imply absurdity about, the American debate concerning the naming and celebration of public holidays. Like Mr. McKiernan, I find humor and occasional outrage in measures taken to be politically correct. At the same time, like many Americans, I am often uncertain how best to contribute respect and inclusion alongside my personal values and beliefs to our pluralistic public discourse.

It was disconcerting to read an editorial in the Record that indulged humor and absurdity at the expense of respect and inclusion concerning an important community issue. By constitution we define ourselves as equal; by law we order our society in ways that reflect this. Our laws protect and promote both individual expression and public equality. Our heritage as pilgrims and immigrants includes escape from oppression and exclusion of minority beliefs. In a Snoqualmie Valley community that continues to grow in strength of diversity, we are challenged now more than ever to balance the beliefs and preferences of the majority with the rights and dignity of all.

I don’t know the correct answer about how we should name and celebrate our public, especially religion-based, holidays. I believe the answer must be better than something like, (hey, most of us are the same; let’s just do what the majority rules!) I think the Record can play a valuable role in fostering thoughtful, considered dialogue about this; but editorials such as “Turning a new leaf toward political correctness” do not further this cause.
