Discussion needed on teacher-planning time

Letter to the Editor.

The Snoqualmie Valley School District has created a committee to explore ways to increase teacher-planning time in our schools. The proposal can be found at the Web site, http://www.snoqualmie.k12.wa.us/Release2004/proposal.pdf . Please review this. If you have questions you can e-mail the assistant superintendent Scott Poirier. His e-mail is poiriers@snoqualmie.k12.wa.us.

Most importantly, there is an upcoming Community Forum on Wednesday, March 31, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Mount Si High School auditorium, 8651 Meadowbrook Way, in Snoqualmie. We are concerned parents regarding this proposal and hope that you will research it and join us at the meeting to see if you agree that this is what is best for our children, for our teachers, parents and community.

It is so important to give your opinion. This committee (which the school board has appointed) is our vote and the only way they vote for the good of the community is for you to follow and review, write, e-mail and give your opinion at these kinds of meetings. The final vote for this is scheduled for the first week of May 2004. We do not believe the committee has looked at all the issues in this one proposal, and it makes us question if it will be a benefit to our children’s education.

Creating a four, full day and then a partial (four-hour) day school week with added minutes to each day doesn’t sound like a benefit to me as a parent – it sounds like more of a disruption. Other school districts have implemented other plans that may work better. One idea is a planning day each month – a Friday, for example . That way only one week would be different, not every week.

We feel that there is a better way and we need your input to find that way. We want what’s best for our fantastic teachers, our wonderful children and supportive parents and community.
