Dial down on hotel hype

There are two public debates going on that could seriously affect the future lives of North Bend’s residents. One is national and one is very local, but both keep getting mired in unsupported claims.

There are two public debates going on that could seriously affect the future lives of North Bend’s residents. One is national and one is very local, but both keep getting mired in unsupported claims.

Thaat common thread connects two very different issues — health care reform and allowing a hotel near Interstate 90. North Bend’s residents are ill-served by the hyperbole that has passed for debate over these issues.

Health care reform could fundamentally affect every American’s standard of living, and the hotel proposed by George Wyrsch off I-90’s Exit 31 could fundamentally affect North Bend’s economic future and the future of nearby neighborhoods. These issues deserve thoughtful and informed discussion, rather than the dire predictions and promises of sunshine forever they have received.

Some comments received by the Record, both online and submitted by e-mail, have more resemblance to personal attacks than meaningful public criticism or dialogue.

No one has offered any reasonable evidence to support widely-optimistic and woefully-pessimistic claims.

Health care reform does not mean euthanasia for the elderly. A hotel at Exit 31 will not become a center for prostitution. Health care reforms won’t pay for themselves. And the proposed hotel won’t singlehandedly usher in a golden age of prosperity for North Bend.

Educate yourself on the issues. Put aside the hyperbole and figure out what’s best for the community’s future.
