Church raises funds for Jamaican projects

Letter to the Editor.

Shiloh Life Fellowship Church in North Bend has an opportunity to

help young people in Robins Bay, on the north coast of Jamaica in St. Mary

Parish. St. Mary Parish (a parish is like one of our counties, like a state) is

one of the poorest parishes on the island. Friends of our church and former

residents of Snoqualmie Valley, Bob and Kim Chase and family, have

operated Sonrise Retreat in Robins Bay, Jamaica, for the past 13 years and

have proposed a project to build a facility for the Robins Bay Public

Primary School (K through 6; 112 students) to house donated computers and books.

Shiloh Life Fellowship, in cooperation with the Chases, would like

to sponsor this effort to construct a small 350 square foot building to serve as

a library and computer room. This room would serve the students of the

school and people of the community as a place where they can come and

receive training on the computers and have access to the library books. As

employment and educational opportunities in Jamaica are very limited,

and unemployment and illiteracy are high, this project well may be a catalyst

of change to break the chain of poverty that has gripped this area.

The estimate for construction is $16,000 US, and we will be

seeking funding support from local and regional businesses and members of

our congregation.

We are planning to send a of team of adults and teenagers to Jamaica

in August 2000 to begin the work. We are raising our own funds for the

airfare and lodging through various fund-raising projects such as car washes

and a combination garage/bake sale in early June (please watch for

announcements).

If you would like to join in helping us out financially with this

project (they could also use printers, ink cartridges and modems for the

computers that were donated), or if there are any further questions you might

have, please don’t hesitate to contact Steve Gilbert, (425) 888-1870.

Tax deductible donations can be mailed to Shiloh Life Fellowship,

The Jamaica Building Project, P.O. Box 123, North Bend, WA 98045.
