Boy Scouts should follow parent group

Letter to the Editor.

I would like to respond to a Sept. 14 letter titled “Boy Scouts have

right to deny gays.”

The letter writer has decided to stop sending his money to United

Way because they have withdrawn their funding to the Boys Scouts

of America.

It is against United Way’s policies to support

any organization that discriminates in any way.

The Scouting Association of Great Britain _ the parent of the Boy

Scouts of America _ has no such policy. It was abolished a few years ago. They

believe everyone, regardless of religion, race or sexual orientation should

be granted equal opportunity to join.

The Boy Scouts discriminate against gay people on a moral

ground. This suggests that they believe straight people are more moral than

gay people.

What if the Boy Scouts decided that they didn’t want

African-Americans, or Asian-Americans or Jewish people to join?

The only thing that really should matter is how good a human being

you are.

You can’t legislate that, no matter how you try.
