‘Your Place of Discovery’ Snoqualmie’s new tagline?

Seattle is known as “The Emerald City,” Tacoma is “The City of Destiny,” and Snoqualmie may soon be known as “Your Place of Discovery.”

The Snoqualmie City Council considered making “Your Place of Discovery” its official tagline during its Monday, March 10, regular meeting. The council is expected to vote on the phrase at its March 24 meeting, and is currently encouraging feedback on the tagline choice from the community.

What is a tagline?

A tagline is a phrase used to establish a city’s identity, and can be directed at local residents, businesses and tourists, or a combination of all three. “Your Place of Discovery” reaches out to all three groups, said City Communications Coordinator Joan Pliego.

The tagline would be used sparingly, put out in community profiles, the Web site, newsletter, tourist maps, brochures and newspaper ads. Maximum cost for the materials would be around $27,000, Pliego said.

“Looking at this tagline, I think there are some definite benefits, not only for this whole city, but for the merchants, the arts community and the theater community,” said Carol Waters, secretary of the Valley Center Stage board of directors. “This is a natural unification.”

“I represents exactly how I feel about Snoqualmie,” added John Good, owner of Koko Beans coffee shop.

Snoqualmie has never had an official tagline before. Councilman Charles Peterson remembered that in the 1970s, the city put out a seal with the word “Snoqualmie” at the top, a picture of the Snoqualmie Falls in the center, and the phrase “Near the Falls” underneath.

The council agreed to discuss the final list of materials getting tagline treatment at a future meeting of its Community and Economic Affairs Committee.
