Volunteers with the Mountains to Sound Greenway are working on a new trail to Kamikaze Falls that provides sweeping views of the surrounding valley, a challenging climb, frequent views of the creek and access to the base of the falls.

The new trail, being built in partnership with the Washington State Department of Natural Resouces (DNR) will provide increased recreation access and a more sustainable route for hikers.

Trail construction dates are 9 a.m. on Saturdays, May 9, 16, 30, and June 6 and 13. Saturday, June 6 is National Trails Day.

There is a trail built by hikers that climbs steeply alongside and sometimes directly in Kamikaze Creek, between Mount Si and Mount Teneriffe.

That trail has become popular in recent years, and traffic has resulted in an eroded and unsightly scar along the creek, said Mike Stenger, Greenway Trust Trails Program Manager.

“Hikers need a suitable alternative that allows them to enjoy the creek and falls without inadvertently causing damage to sensitive areas,” he said.

The new trail is within the Mount Si Natural Resources Conservation Area and will provide a 3.6-mile round trip to the falls.

“This trail will prevent future ecological damage and provide a safe and enjoyable hiking experience,” said Kelly Heintz, Natural Areas Manager for the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.
