Unwelcome gift irks Valley family

NORTH BEND - Having someone dump construction waste on your property is bad enough, but Kathy and Brian Sumner were not expecting what else got dropped off.

NORTH BEND – Having someone dump construction waste on your property is bad enough, but Kathy and Brian Sumner were not expecting what else got dropped off.

After calling the King County Sheriff’s Office last month when they discovered a pile of garbage dumped on their property, the Sumners watched as a deputy inspected a foul-smelling bag in the pile that the North Bend family thought was food waste.

“When he inspected it we realized it was human feces,” said Kathy. “It was disgusting.”

Feces, sliding glass door frames, window frames, sheet rock, doors, cedar siding and even a child’s doll were among the garbage that appeared behind the Sumners home off Edgewick Road and 464th Way Southeast east of North Bend. The Sumners discovered the debris the morning of May 30, prompting them to think the dumping had occurred the pervious night or even the night before that. They questioned their neighbors about whether they had seen or heard anything, but didn’t learn much.

While it’s frustrating to the Sumners as to who dumped the pile of garbage on their property, it is not hard to figure out why. Their land is surrounded by woods that are accessible by only one road that was not blocked, but clearly marked with a “no dumping” sign.

Some evidence was taken by the King County Sheriff’s Office for investigation, including a receipt for a large purchase from a hardware store, but no arrests have been made yet.
