In many Snoqualmie neighborhoods, there has been an increase in children playing in streets, cul-de-sacs, and alleys. The Snoqualmie Police Department is becoming increasingly concerned and is requesting that parents keep their children in their yards or to use any of the city’s 35 parks.

“Risks associated with playing in streets include speeding cars, drivers who are unfamiliar with neighborhoods, and children’s own limitations in distance and depth perception, as well as their experience and judgment,” said officer Nigel Draveling.

A common practice lately is the use of bright green or yellow plastic kid alert safety signs, otherwise known as “little green men.” While they can be a good safety tool in alerting drivers that children are in the vicinity, they can also create a false sense of security for kids and parents when used incorrectly.

The Police Department implores parents to keep their children out of the streets. This may mean changing a standard routine—especially in the summer. But there are many other places to play ball, ride bikes, and use chalk. To learn more, call the police station at (425) 888-3333.
