WASL results are out, and the Snoqualmie Valley School District is pleased with the numbers. Assistant Superintendent Don McConkey told the school board at its regular meeting on Sept. 11 that the district outperformed the state in all areas at all grade levels.

“We should all be very proud,” he said. “But we can’t sit back on our laurels. We can’t accept status quo.”

McConkey said the district will use the WASL data to help children who are struggling.

“We can provide strategic and intentional interventions for those kids,” he said.

McConkey reported an upward trend in the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards on the WASL in reading, writing, math and science at grades four, seven and 10 over the past four years.

According to one ranking method reported at the Web site www.schooldigger.com, Mount Si High School scored in the top 9 percent of the state for combined math and reading scores. The district as a whole ranked seventh out of 252 school districts in the state.

The high school saw dramatic improvements in 10th-grade writing scores since 2004. In 2008, 95 percent of sophomores met standards. McConkey attributed this success to the school’s effort to reinforce writing skills across the curricula. He said the district was implementing a similar program to apply math skills in all classes. Along with science and a gender gap, math was identified as an “area of opportunity” in the district.

Greg Lobdell of the Center for Educational Effectiveness, Inc. will present an analysis of the WASL results at the Sept. 25 school board meeting, which will start at 7:30 p.m. at the school district headquarters, located at 8001 Silva Ave. S.E. in Snoqualmie.
