Schools making up lost time

Published 9:48 am Thursday, October 2, 2008

Russell Neis, father of two Cascade View Elementary School students, already has paid for the family vacation airline tickets and hotel. Unfortunately, he planned the much-needed getaway during the Snoqualmie Valley School District’s midwinter break in February. The district’s board of directors canceled the break to make up days lost to winter storms and the December power outage.

“The cancellation and reschedule fees are very steep and I do not see that as an option,” Neis said.

He wrote a letter to the board members expressing his concerns, noting that the stress of a long, tough winter makes getting out of town important for the family’s sanity, calling the decision a “terrible compromise to have to make.”
