NORTH BEND – North Bend resident Mark W. Moffatt, 39, died July 3 from a fall down a 60-foot embankment six miles up Southeast Middle Fork Road.

An Eastside Fire & Rescue crew arrived at the scene at about 11:20 a.m. and set up a rope system to navigate the bank and rescue Moffatt, who was unconscious at the time and laying on his side.

Moffatt was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, where he died at 1:07 p.m. The exact physical cause of his death is still undetermined, although Moffatt had injuries to his head and body, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Three teens discovered Moffatt after noticing a small dog tied to a mountain bicycle parked on the side of the road, near the river.

At this time, police have no reason to suspect foul play in the incident, said Bob Conner of King County SheriffOs Office.

Police and fire officials caution mountain bikers and hikers to avoid the soft shoulder of roads and trails.
