North Bend hotel vote on hold until 2010

Council waits for new members to discuss lodging rules

The North Bend City Council will wait until 2010 before tackling the city planning commission’s recommendation on new rules allowing a hotel south of Interstate 90.

“The planning commission has provided the city council a recommendation and we’ve put it on hold for the month of December,” said Gina Estep, North Bend’s director of community and economic development.

Estep believes action for the North Bend Hotel will not be taken until January.

In a stormy Oct. 8 session that saw one commissioner resign, the North Bend Planning Commission approved staff recommendations on new rules allowing a hotel south of Exit 31, not far from the Forster Woods residential area.

Before continuing the heavily-debated decision process, the council wants the two newly appointed members to take part.

North Bend businessman George Wyrsch, who has aired plans to build a Hampton Inn south of exit 31, is also waiting for council action to move forward.

“The planning commission allowed changes for a hotel on the south side of I-90,” Wyrsch said. “But until the city council takes action, that has no effect at all.”
