Following a suspicious, but uneventful incident near a school bus stop in North Bend on Wednesday morning, April 23, North Bend Elementary School staff are reminding parents to talk with their children about stranger danger and personal safety.

The incident occurred in the 400 block of Healy Avenue in North Bend, near the old Si View area. Two students, walking to their bus stop, told their bus driver that one of the people sitting in a parked white SUV had gestured for them to approach the car.

“The kids did not go toward the vehicle but they reported it to the bus driver,” said school district spokeswoman Carolyn Malcolm. “There were two women in the vehicle, and (the kids) didn’t know them.”

Following Snoqualmie Valley School District protocol, the driver contacted dispatch by radio, and the dispatch center contacted police. The district also contacted the students parents, Malcolm said. One of the parents told school staff that she’d been watching the children walk to the bus stop, and had seen the car but hadn’t noticed anything suspicious.

Snoqualmie Police investigated and have determined that the car, a white Toyota or Hyundai SUV, was a rental. They have contacted the rental agency and hope to identify the people in the vehicle, to talk with them about the incident.

“The police said there’s no indication of criminal activity, and no words were exchanged,” Malcolm said.

As a precaution, the district is notifying parents about the incident, as well as Opstad Elementary School, which has an early-morning child care program.
