No major environmental impacts for hotel, city rules

A proposed zoning code amendment to allow a hotel beside Interstate 90’s Exit 31 moved forward last week after North Bend determined the requested change would not have any adverse environmental affects that could not be mitigated.

A proposed zoning code amendment to allow a hotel beside Interstate 90’s Exit 31 moved forward last week after North Bend determined the requested change would not have any adverse environmental affects that could not be mitigated.

The city’s decision pertained only to the proposed amendment and not to any building plans, which would have to be submitted for permitting approval if the amendment is approved by the City Council.

The council is expected to vote in October on the proposal, which must also be reviewed by at least two city committees.

The city’s Economic Development Commission will review the proposed zoning change at its meeting on Thursday, Aug. 20. The Planning Commission will consider the proposal at its meeting on Thursday, Aug. 27.

The proposed amendment, which was submitted by George Wyrsch, has already evoked heated opposition from some residents of the Forster Woods neighborhood, which is next to the affected land.

Wyrsch is the property’s principal owner, and wants to build a four-story, 78-room hotel on the site.
