The Mount Si High School chapter of National Honor Society, the largest club at Mount Si High School, recently finished its second annual spring service project in partnership with the city of Snoqualmie.

Over four days, roughly 250 National Honor Society members did landscaping and maintenance projects at parks throughout the city. Students worked at Centennial Park April 8, Ironwood Park April 9, Fisher Creek Park April 15 and Community Park April 16.

• Among the projects they completed were:

• Restoring a quarter-acre lot with 90 native shrubs and trees;

• Mulching about 100 trees at Centennial Field and install 20 tree guards;

• Mulching a trail, the bike park, and dig out the silt fence at Fisher Creek Park;

• Weeding beds and clear the gravel path at Ironwood Park;

• Removing butterfly bush and blackberry from the Kinsey-Fairway trail;

• Planting and mulching the iris pond landscape bed at Community Park.

Each member served for two hours, for a total of 500 service hours. Students said they enjoyed working in a fun, safe, and motivational environment where they felt they were directly affecting their community. The project not only physically benefited the parks, it also gave students a sense of ownership in their community, thus decreasing the amount of vandalism and destruction of parks.

Snoqualmie public works employees were present at each project to help organize, explain, and assist in the activities. All tools, equipment, materials, and even snacks were provided by the city staff.

In May, the club has planned a project with the city of North Bend to clean up two roundabouts.

The group is also planning a freshman spring service project, for students interesting in joining National Honor Society next year, at both high school campuses May 27.
