ISSAQUAH – Mount Si High School football fans may recognize the name Brian Woodwick. The class of ’77 graduate was a 4-year letterman who broke a school record for the longest run from scrimmage.

His name has also gained notoriety in the world of music and fine-art photography because his favorite place to be was not always behind the quarterback, but behind the camera.

“I really can’t explain why I like it so much,” Woodwick said. “I just like beautiful things.”

Woodwick, who is known by “WoodEye” in the professional photography circles in which he circulates, first started tinkering around with cameras when he was 4. His mother, who used to write for the Valley Record, had a small darkroom in their home where Woodwick learned how to shoot and develop. By the time he got to high school, he was known as “the kid with the camera,” with a photographer’s bag and camera always around his neck. As a freshmen, he would talk his way into the darkroom, which was off limits to his class. At one time, four of his five classes were in the darkroom. He took photos for the newspaper, the yearbook and got to be known as the designated district photographer.
