While attempting a U-turn on State Route 18 near the Raging River late Wednesday night, July 6, a 65-year-old man was killed when his car collided with a tractor-trailer.

A woman riding in the car was transported to Harborview Medical Center but died later of her injuries.

The accident occurred around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, said Washington State Patrol Trooper Julie Startup, who was one of the responding officers. A disabled pickup truck was parked on the shoulder of the eastbound lane, and the male driver reported that his female passenger, a 47-year-old Enumclaw woman, had gone to get help. She returned in a black car, westbound, Startup said, presumably with a Good Samaritan who was planning to help.

“Witnesses say he drove onto the shoulder like he was going to make a U-turn behind the pickup truck,” said Startup. When the black car swung out onto the road for the U-turn, it crossed in front of a westbound semi truck.

The driver of the car was killed in the crash. His identifying papers didn’t include a current address, but his last known address was in Issaquah. His name has not been released until law enforcement can notify his next of kin.

The driver of the semi was not hurt.

The primary witness, the driver of the pickup truck, learned during the course of his interview that his female passenger had died at Harborview, and was unable to complete the interview, Startup said.

Investigation is not complete, Startup said, so no definite cause has been stated, but “I don’t know if there were any other factors than the maneuver of the driver in the black car.”
