The Valley Record recently featured Citizen of the Week Donna Padilla’s efforts to sweeten wounded soldiers’ hospital stays with homemade treats.

The “Baker Angels” program for which Padilla volunteers is part of a larger non-profit organization called “Operation Homefront Washington,” which supports military families through financial aid, social outreach and other programs.

to hold book sale

The annual Friends of the North Bend Library book sale will run from Saturday, Aug. 16 through Saturday, Aug. 30. Gently-used hardcover books, paperbacks, children’s books, DVDs, compact discs, videos, books on tape and other items will be sold at bargain prices. Most items range from 25 cents to a whopping dollar.

Bigger bargains can be had on the final day of sale, with a bag sale for $1. Buy a bag and you can keep all the books you can cram inside.

The Friends’ sale takes place during regular library hours, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The library is located at 115 E. 4th St., North Bend.

Proceeds from the sale help fund North Bend Library improvements and enhancements as well as support programs for children, teens and adults.
