Despite efforts by foot, helicopter, and a friend performing CPR, a 27-year-old hiker died Thursday, Aug. 28, after a fall atop Mount Si.

The San Jose, Calif., man fell about 200 feet from the Haystack lookout on the mountain, around 1 p.m. Thursday.

Weather was foggy, with only a few feet of visibility, and the man slipped and fell to the bottom of a slope.

Rescuers managed to get to him by 3:40 p.m., and he died around 4:10 p.m. Reports stated that the man’s 29-year-old climbing partner began CPR efforts before rescue teams found them.

Search and rescue teams climbed and hovered around Si’s rugged slopes, battling the elements in their search for the fallen man. As ground crews made their way from a back road leading from Mount Si Road, the King County Sheriff’s Office’s Guardian Two helicopter attempted to reach the injured man. A layer of fog at about 2,600 feet prevented the helicopter from getting close to the site of the fall, at 4,200 feet.

“We were able to get about halfway up the mountain, and insert four rescue personnel and equipment on road, so they didn’t have to hike at least halfway,” said Sheriff’s deputy and pilot Keith Potter.

The helicopter dropped the crew down a 150-foot line, in 30 knots of wind. Potter had to make sure the helicopter stayed steady, but the drop went smoothly. Onlookers watched as the helicopter then landed Thursday afternoon at Torguson Park in North Bend to wait for news or better weather.

The fallen hiker’s body was removed from the mountain by search and rescue personnel using rigging and a litter.
