Rescuers saved a terrier named Ana from the peak of Mount Si last week.

According to King County Sheriff’s Office reports, on Monday, April 9, members of the King County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team along with the Seattle Mountain Rescue and King County 4X4 Search and Rescue, joined up with the Washington State Animal Response Team in an attempt to rescue Ana, a 100-pound French Terrier, from the peak of Mount Si at 3,500 feet.

The Washington State Animal Response Team, or WASART, was initially called out Sunday afternoon by the sheriff’s office after the dog’s owner called to report that her dog refused to descend the steep, snow covered slope of The Haystack, at the top of the mountain.  The owner told rescuers that something had scared Ana, causing her to run about 250 feet up the mountain, where there is no trail.

WASART was contacted and deployed two of its Technical Rescue Team members to hike up to meet the owner.  When they arrived at the base, they determined it was too risky to attempt to rescue the dog that night. They returned to the base camp at the Mount Si trailhead and planned a joint rescue effort for the next morning.  King County Search and Rescue Teams were called in and the teams assembled at the camp Monday morning.

The teams and the dog’s owner hiked in from the snow line. It was a difficult and slow hike on the soft snow. The Seattle Mountain Rescue team climbed to the top of The Haystack, where they found Ana, cold and anxious. They secured her with a harness and lowered her down the mountain by ropes where the Animal Response Team was waiting to collect her.

Ana is now back home with her owner and is said to be doing fine.
