Longtime North Bend Elementary principal and former collegiate college star Frank Cernick recently was inducted to the Central Washington University Hall of Fame at a May 20 ceremony in Ellensburg.
Eighteen candidates for the prestigious award were considered. Four made the cut.
Cernick and his CWU tennis teammates were honored for their extraordinary winning streak in 1959, when they recorded a 52-0 All-Conference record (singles and doubles) and finished 76-8 (90.5 percent), took home the league and district championships and then tied for third place in the nationals.
The record Cernick and his teammates inked into history has yet to be broken – and probably never will.
Since the mid-80s, CWU’s athletic department has never again offered tennis as a league sport.
