Coming off their shocking opening week home shutout loss to Skyline, the Bellevue Wolverines football team rolled into Mount Si last Friday night looking to prove something not just to themselves, but to people who may have doubted the strength of this year’s team. They did that, in a big way.

Converted lineman Eric Nelson scored two touchdowns, and Rusty Haehl had a long score of his own as the Wolverines took a 31-0 lead and cruised to a 31-14 win over the Wildcats.

“They just beat us horribly up front and we couldn’t get any push going and basically we rubbed the green off all night tonight so our younger kids grew up a lot, and we just got to put this experience in the bank and go from there,” said Wildcat coach Charlie Kinnune. Mount Si quarterback Tyson Riley tipped his cap to the Wolverines. “[We] came out prepared and they were just a better team. We gave our best, 100 percent,” Riley said.

Bellevue opened the scoring near the end of the first quarter, but Wildcat fans were also pleased with what they saw. On their first drive the Wolverines made their way down to Mount Si’s 1-yard line after a 22-yard run by Haehl. The Wildcat defense then stepped up and did not allow the Wolverines to go any farther. Plays by several Mount Si defenders, among them Zach Brevick and Jeff Chapman, kept Bellevue from reaching paydirt on the drive. The Wolverines settled for a Josh Strasser 26-yard field goal, and Bellevue ended the first quarter up 3-0.
