Carlson gets first-degree black belt

Fall City resident Tayler Carlson, 13, was recently promoted to the rank of first-degree black belt. To qualify, Carlson performed a series of patterns along with demonstrations of board breaking and her ability to defend herself.

Fall City resident Tayler Carlson, 13, was recently promoted to the rank of first-degree black belt. To qualify, Carlson performed a series of patterns along with demonstrations of board breaking and her ability to defend herself.

A pattern is a combination of defenses and counter attacks designed to strengthen muscles and improve coordination. Boards are broken using a hand technique and a foot technique to demonstrate strength and focus. Sparring against one opponent and against three opponents is used to demonstrate self-defense.

Carlson attends Chief Kanim Middle School and is also active in soccer and snowboarding. She attends tae kwon do classes at Tolt Valley Tae Kwon Do in Carnation.
