CARNATION – A quick look at the apartment of George Hanson of Carnation reveals little about his past.

It is clean and tidy, not a very hard state to keep it in since it is also small, with two bedrooms, a bathroom and a living room that opens into a small kitchen.

It’s also very tidy because there is not much around. There are no pictures, save a family picture on top of the television Hanson has in his living room.

For a man who just turned 90, it may seem odd. After nearly a century of living, most of it in one city, one might expect a large house packed with memories and momentos.

But for Hanson, it seems fitting to a man who felt as much at home in the world as he did in the Valley.

Hanson was born just outside Fargo, N.D., in 1912. He came from a family of “two great parents” and 10 children, who “didn’t have anything.” He left home, sometime before his 18th birthday, and set out to find work in the Depression-mired nation.
