Out of the past: Local man to receive a medal for saving two from drowning; Truck Town day care moves a step closer to reality

• Danny Byrd, son of the James Byrds of the Coal Mine Road, is due to receive a reward from the town of Seaside, Calif., and a Soldier’s Medal for his part in saving two men from drowning. Byrd, a U.S. Army private, his buddy, Pvt. Ray Kenton, and their wives, who share an apartment near Fort Ord, were enjoying an afternoon at the beach on May 15 when they spotted an overturned boat in the distance. The soldiers swam out brought the two men ashore and applied artificial respiration until the arrival of and ambulance and physician.

• The Fall City Library Building Fund has reached $8,811, according to a report from Peggy Corliss, Library Committee. “The architects have been working on our building plans but the Boeing boom has caused our time schedule to be altered. It is hoped that bids can be called or by early fall and the building started soon after,” Mrs. Corliss said.

• The King County Council will hold a special meeting at Fall City Elementary School on Tuesday regarding a proposed new regional government body. County, Seattle and suburban officials have met for the past eight months to discuss remedies for a federal ruling that the Metro Council is unconstitutional because it does not adequately satisfy one-person, one-vote requirements. The proposed solution is a merger between Metro, which currently provides bus and sewage-treatment services, and King County.

• Lia Swanson’s goal of establishing a child-care facility for employees at Seattle-East ’76 Auto/Truck Plaza (Truck Town) is on its way to being realized. On June 20, Kinder-Care Regional Director Jacqui Murray ill visit Truck Town to meet with Swanson and other local business owners who are interested in forming a child-care consortium.
