The following stories made the news in the Valley 50 and 25 years ago, as found in the Snoqualmie Valley Record archives.

Oct. 6, 1988

• Smoking will soon be banned in the Riverview School District, not only for students but also for staff and visitors as well.

• Harold and Edna Becker remember their grim introduction to the Snoqualmie Valley seven years ago. The couple and family members were leaving Carnation for Harold, an Assembly of God pastor, to give his final sermon at Woodinville. They were struck by a drunk driver. Edna’s mother and brother were killed, and Harold and Edna were seriously injured. Despite the horror, good things eventually followed. The Beckers founded the Carnation Assembly of God Church, and are now taking a rest before following their next call.

Oct. 10, 1963

• Next Saturday, the guns start booming from one side of our game-loaded state to the other. Yellow, orange, red and bright pink are the colors to wear. It is no secret that this is expected to be a BIG YEAR for deer and upland game of all kinds.

• King County Commissioner John O’Brien surprised when he arrived for a meeting of the North Bend Chamber of Commerce by helicopter, landing at a field by the North Bend Clinic. O’Brien said the trip was to save time, as hearings on the $43 million county budget were held both morning and afternoon.
